When should a production line move to five-axis machining?

作者:

Start with workpiece complexity

Five-axis machining becomes valuable when a part needs access to several faces, compound angles, deep cavities, or controlled tool orientation. The first decision is not the number of axes by itself; it is the relationship between geometry, setup time, workholding, and the required inspection method.

Measure the setup reduction

Review how many manual repositioning steps the current process requires. Fewer setups can reduce datum transfer, handling time, and accumulated variation when the machine, fixture, probing, and process plan are matched correctly.

Match the machine to the process

Compare table size, rotary capacity, spindle speed and torque, tool access, control functions, probing, and chip evacuation. A five-axis configuration should be selected around the complete workpiece and cutting strategy.

What buyers should verify

Ask for a sample-part review, machine configuration, inspection scope, acceptance method, and technical documents. Norden CNC applications engineers use these inputs to recommend a suitable machine family rather than relying on a generic specification list.
